Save the Gefilte Fish

April 19, 2006 • LA Weekly • by Paul Krassner

He has been compared to Lord Buckley, Lenny Bruce, Robin Williams and Andy Kaufman. L.A. Times critic Dan Sullivan wrote, “He reminds me of all three Marx Brothers rolled into one.” But Darryl Henriques is simply himself, a unique satirist of intensive talent.

He began his professional career with the San Francisco Mime Troupe in 1967, then founded the East Bay Sharks, a musical street theater dealing with social-political issues. He is known as the voice of the Swami from Miami (first patriarch of the Buish faith, combining the serenity of Buddhism with Jewish chutzpah); Joe Carcinogenni (consumer advocate for a vast array of toxic chemicals); Rattus Rat (survivor of the first H-bomb explosion, with his paw firmly on the subject of interspecies relations); the Rev. Clyde Fingerdip (Minister of Home Repairs, who heals broken appliances over the radio); and the aforementioned Jacques Kissmatoe.

After appearing as a finalist in the San Francisco standup competition, he performed at clubs across the country, including the Improv and the Comedy Store, moving to Los Angeles in 1984. When he went on KPFK impersonating the deceased President Nixon, listeners called in and spoke to “Nixon” as if he were still alive. Darryl now runs the Leaning Pizza Catering Company. He goes to his clients’ homes, cooks pizza and performs comedy. And he’s written a book, 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Pave the Earth.

“We’re doomed,” he says. “Pass the champagne!”

How I accidentally became

a stand up comedian

I was working at KSAN with Scoop Nisker on The Last News Show and I had created a series of characters for the show including Joe Carcinogenni the Purple Poisoner with more treats and eats from the wonderful world of poisons; The Swami from Miami with Cosmic Advice for Mundane Matters; Jacques Kissmatoe the President of the Committee To Save the Gefilte Fish (the stupidest of all underwater creatures); The Reverend Clyde Fingertip Minister of Home Repairs. etc., etc. And one day someone who had listened to me on the radio asked me to come to a birthday party he was having and perform. That was my first show which led me to perform at the Ecology Club in S.F. and then somehow I started performing at the local clubs.

GOURMET GHETTO

Coined Term

"The term “Gourmet Ghetto” was part of a routine Henriques had for chiding the social mores of the neighborhood.
Henriques was a joker, a member of East Bay Comedy Sharks and satirist theater group San Francisco Mime Troupe. He performed stand-up at Freight and Salvage and was a member of the Cheese Board collective in the early ’70s.
“I remember him talking, holding forth, going on about the ‘decline’ of the neighborhood as it became increasingly focused on fancy food post-Chez Panisse.”
The end result — that a term of gentle mockery for a collection of conscious eateries has become the banner the district rallies around. There are websites, brochures, books and a line of apparel all advertising the Gourmet Ghetto.
“What started out as a joke ended up as the official moniker,”"

Other Cafe

Quick Thinking

One night I was performing at the Other Cafe and while I was entertaining the patrons a rather large cockroach jumped on to me and I quickly reassured the audience by proclaiming,
"It's nothing to worry about folks, it's just one of the kitchen workers."

Darryl Henriquez is in Show Business - 2006

The story of a comedian struggling to come to terms with his eccentricities as he attempts to gain access to a larger audience without compromising the integrity of his humor.

Is Darryl Dead yet?

2007 • Freight & Salvage

Darryl presents his new show, “Is Darryl Dead Yet?” Fresh from his stint as an enumerator for the U.S. Census he will be delving into the critical question of whether or not he still exists on this the earthly plane. His show will attempt to identify exactly who he is, or at any rate who he thinks he is. It promises to be a comedic existential extravaganza with tales of the Cheese Board, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, the U.S. Army, and the Rocky River Police Department.
